Pocklington School is gearing up to celebrate its 500th birthday in 2014 and to mark the occasion the Old Pocklingtonian Association has teamed up with Wold Top Brewery to create a new real ale called ‘Old Pock’. The unique brew has been specially created by well known local brewery owner and farmer Tom Mellor, himself an old boy of the school, in liaison with one of his contemporaries and Old Pocklingtonian Association President Tom Nash. “We wanted to create a bespoke beer to help celebrate the anniversary. Five hundred years of the school being here in Pocklington is a fantastic achievement and only two other schools in the whole country still have their original medieval charter and seal which we have reproduced on the label. It is a lovely light amber ale just as well served at room temperature or chilled and the feedback so far has been very positive,” explained Tom Nash. The proceeds from the sale of Old Pock will be shared between the Association and the school’s Project Archive 1514 appeal which is raising funds to build an archive room adjacent to the school library in preparation for the 500th anniversary. “The school has so many interesting historical artefacts, trophies, uniforms, documents and photographs in its archive collection. Being able to put these on display for pupils, staff and visitors alike to view, research, and enjoy the school’s rich history and hopefully to add to it over the next 500 years, will be a fantastic resource for both the school and the wider community,” commented Tom Nash. Old Pock is available from Clare and Neil Saunders of C&N Wines who are stocking the beer in their newly fitted shop in Market Place, Pocklington. Old Pock can be purchased as a single bottle (£2.50), a gift pack of 3 bottles (£7.50), or a shrink wrapped crate of 12 bottles (£25.00).
